West 89th between West End and Riverside - that’s a 900 2 door in front of that awning. Surprised me, but if you want to see Saabs, it’s the Upper West Side or Brooklyn. We’re still shopping for an apartment - the one we were up there to see disappointed once again as the bathroom was for shit. At least we got to have Wellfleet oysters at our !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The little country boy from North Carolina (and New Jersey) inside me wants to grow up and move to New York but from what I hear it’s kinda a hassle.
Like I like the idea of the city, and New York has a lot to offer, but it’s an expensive thing to get into. I’d hate to move there and then get stuck there if I don’t like it. Also I’m used to having a garage, and driving, and being able to do things you can’t do in an apartment, all things I don’t mind giving up, but all things I would miss.

“Bathroom was for shit”, where are you supposed to piss then? I mean at some point in our lives we’ve all taken a piss in a sink in a severe emergency to relieve water pressure in ourselves.
Actually throw caution to the wind (just don’t pee into the wind) and pee in the bathroom also, just don’t tell anyone, close the door and lock it. Maybe that’s why toilets have locks!
Hmmmm, the more I learn, the more I know.

When I moved here in July 2001, I briefly considered keeping my ‘97 SHO, but it would have cost near 500 bucks to keep it inside in a garage. Sure, the rents are high, but I have no car payment, car insurance, and my gasoline purchases are negligible. No yard to tend, no house to fix, and a staff that keeps the building tidy and shovels the snow. We’re looking for apartments - sure, they’re expensive, but we have few other expenses.
NYC is surprisingly easy to get used to - you learn where to shop and eat so you don’t overspend. I’m used to public transportation, that happened quickly. I rent cars 3 or 4 times a year, and once in a while I rent something interesting. Next trip I take alone, I’m getting an S2000 from Relay Rides. That memory will last.
And at least for me, the city doesn’t wear on me like some ... I have a routine, and I generally stick to it. You can get anything delivered, and we generally do - I have mild agoraphobia, and I tend to stay in.

You would think, for the amount they ask for these apartments (north of 700 grand) that you’d get a decent bathroom. You often don’t. And generally, when they redo a kitchen and sell it as a sponsor unit (no board approval) they use high end appliances. Not so on this apartment - all Frigidaire, which is fine in our rental - my landlord put in a Frigidaire dishwasher, and it works just fine. But the SigOther likes a particular Italian stove (and so do I - I am the cook here) that you see in lots of rehabs, and I like a German dishwasher and a nice fridge.
Damn. I am a first world crybaby.

700,000 for an apartment. I’ve found where the piss goes, clearly they’re taking it. Ba-dum-tish.
Not first world cry baby at all fella. You pay good money you want good products, you earned the money, you deserve value for it.

This is what we saw today - she’s out looking at another one right now that I predicted would be too small, and sure enough, she texted me that it was. We both have the ability to get a low rate mortgage through work, so that’s what permits shopping in a higher price range. The bathroom in the one I saw earlier was just tiny, and we’d have had to move the tub to bump it out. I’m willing to pay to renovate a kitchen or a bathroom, but tearing out walls is another thing entirely.

I’ll check the link on my break. Unfortunately I’ve had to start work. :(

To be fair that doesn’t look too bad to me. But then the price for me is ‘ha ha ha, are you high?’ for me. That money would get a five bedroom detached hous in a very nice village a couple of miles away from me but I guess the commute to New York each day would be a killer. :)

It’s all about how long you want the subway ride to be, although it’s longer from Brooklyn and, based on our apartment hunting, it’s more (!) expensive there. At the beginning, she was “anywhere but the Upper West Side!” Now that she’s lived here for 3 years, it’s “NOWHERE but the UWS!” So we soldier on.

Keep plugging away and putting feelers out with colleagues.
Fingers crossed you find something right for you and your finances.

There’s a perfect apartment for us, but the maintenance is $1690 per month. Other apartments in the price range are 14, maybe 15 hundred a month. It’s a big consideration.

We’ll get it together eventually - it’s just we need to stop paying rent and start getting a mortgage deduction.

Ye’, it’s fine tuning the transition. Renting is convenient till you find the right place but while you are renting you aren’t able to save up much fast to put down for a mortgage. It’s a catch 22. You’ll make it fella.
